Food (5/5 stars): Mike's Red Tacos is on Yelp's Top 100 Places in the US list and I was thrilled to try it, especially because Birria is one of my favorite foods. Their Combo #1 came with two hefty Quesabirria Tacos, Consomé, and Chips. Each bite (dunked into the Consomé of course) was heavenly. The tacos were oozing with juice and together with the Consomé was a symphony of flavors. This is one of my new favorite places in San Diego, and quite possibly of all time. Experience (5/5 stars): * Price: reasonable * Wait Time: about 10-15 minute wait on a Friday evening, but so worth it * Service: good * Parking: there's a small parking lot * Ambiance: it's a nicely decorated spot, just a bit tight especially for how popular it is.
The pictures were what convinced me to try this spot out and wasn't disappointed!! We stopped by mid-day and for the size of the location, it was kinda packed, but folks were able to ease out and make room afterwards. I ordered a California burrito from a different restaurant earlier and was so disappointed, so we stopped by at Mike's Red Tacos to order their California burrito to make up for it. This place redeemed my California burrito craving - it was a huge burrito (probably the biggest I've ever ordered ever), which they ask you if you'd like it cut in half or not, the tortilla's crispy and the fries inside were soft inside and crispy outside as well. I could go in about how much this burrito was so much better than the other one I had, but let's not lmao It was soooo good and the horchata was hella smackin too. Thank you!!
YUMMYYY got both the cali and breakfast burrito and these hit the spot fs :D The cali burrito was def my fav of the two, and the beef birria was so juicy and flavorful,, loved the guac in it too! Nothing bad to say about it honestly; was a decent size as well The breakfast burrito was yummy but I personally couldn't taste the egg tooo much, but I did enjoy the hashbrowns in it I forgot which sauces I got, but I remember them being tasty LOL :') fast service,, would come back!!
Birria is the hot new trend for Mexican food, and Mike's Red Tacos knows how to do it right! Located in a strip mall, Mike's Red Tacos is a hole-in-the-wall spot with very minimal seating. Based on previous reviews, there are usually long lines for this place, but we got very lucky. We were one of the first to arrive when it opened and we didn't have to wait at all. They have a beautiful, multicolored salsa bar, providing 6 varieties of salsa from mild to hot AF. The food: Birria Ramen - essentially top ramen noodles in Birria Consomé. It was hearty, and truthfully, kind of tasted like the Vietnamese Bo Kho. The ramen noodles could be better, as I'm usually not a fan of top ramen texture (too soft), but overall, this was tasty. Cheese Quesadilla - standard. Stuffed with melty, cheesy mozzarella. Breakfast Burrito - if you're looking for a typical breakfast burrito, this is not it. It's packed with juicy birria, and you can hardly taste the eggs and hash browns. Still delicious but the other ingredients are definitely overpowered by the meat. I would definitely come back for the burrito and want to try their tacos.
Service was great. It was my first time there and Emily was my server and answered all of my questions, the wait wasn't as long as I thought it would be and it tasted delicious. I definitely recommend this place
Amazing customer service from all the young ladies working in the front of the restaurant! Love their salsa bar
Went to check out this place because my friends love birria. I personally don't eat red meat but saw they have VEGGIE TACOS as an option. Hell yeah! Seating is kind of limited and this place gets pretty packed!! Which means its a place to visit right? Everyone was really nice! And they're quick to clean and turn around for the tables so that there may be a chance to sit and eat. The table in the middle is long so you may share with others. Like two very small parties. I got a Veggie Taco (Sauteed Portobello Mushrooms, Bell Peppers, Poblano Peppers, Beans & Potatoes, Topped w/ Guacamole, Cilantro & Onions) and added cheese. They have an extensive salsa bar. From mild to extremely spicy. The spicier ones were flavorful and hit the spot! It wasn't overbearingly spicy for me (then again I do have dragon breath). For the sides I got the beans and rice. Beans were savory and has flavor. Not bad! I've been to places where it was literally just beans and was plain. Maybe I'll ask to add cheese to make it cheesy beans which would be fantastic. Rice was all right. Chips were crispy and made in house. Has flakes of salt. I used the chips to scoop up the beans and the veggies that fell out of my taco. For my drink, I got the horchata. It was a fountain drink option. I wished it was made by them to give it more of authenticity but it was all right!
Best Birria tacos I've had! Amazing spread of salsa choices and all around delicious taste! Large portions very filling!!
I love Mike's Red Tacos!! I feel like it's gotten better since my first ever visit at their food truck a few years ago. Finally tried their actual restaurant and it's so good, I visited twice in less than a month. I've always opted for the #2 Combo which comes with 2 birria tacos, a full cup of consomme broth, tortilla chips, and fix-ins like lime, onion, cilantro organized nicely on your tray. The flavor and texture of the birria is perfect to me. The taco shell is nice and crunchy. There isn't anything I don't like about this... if anything I would swap out the tortilla chips for an extra taco ;) Under $15 for my combo Pretty small shop with about a handful of tables and always busy when I go, but turnover is usually quick. Service is always very friendly. Parking lot could get a little tight. Highly recommend!
